What is Burnout?

Burnout, also known as exhaustion, occurs when the body and brain feel completely drained and overwhelmed by physical, emotional, and/or mental stress over an extended period.

Burnout syndrome is a result of severe stress combined with insufficient recovery. Many people can function on reserve energy and stress hormones for a prolonged period. It’s not uncommon for individuals to struggle for several years without enough energy, experiencing a variety of different symptoms.

When one collapses from burnout, it is the body’s way of signaling that it can no longer cope and that all resources and strategies have been depleted.

What are the signs of Burnout?

The symptoms of burnout can manifest in various ways for different individuals. Burnout affects all areas of life, impacting both the body and the mind. The most important thing is to take the signs of stress and burnout seriously to prevent the condition from worsening.

It is also common to experience feelings of guilt or a sense of failure when facing burnout, along with anxiety about how others perceive you. Many feel pressured to perform, even when their body and mind signal that it’s time to pause.

Who suffers from Burnout?

Burnout can affect anyone, but certain personality types may increase the risk. Those who experience burnout are often resilient, driven, ambitious, and helpful individuals with a strong sense of empathy. They tend to prioritize others’ well-being over their own, often leading to disappointment in themselves.

These individuals are usually passionate about important causes, which can easily lead them to take on many commitments and strive to do everything to the best of their ability.

Additionally, those with a high workload and responsibilities people balancing multiple roles and obligations are at a greater risk of burnout.
